Period Pieces
I dreamed of Poe and Emily after watching the The Raven (2012) last night. I watched that on the heels of viewing the 2020 BBC adaptation of Dracula (now on Netflix), in the rearview reflection of Margaret Atwood’s 2017 adaptation of Alias Grace, through the looking glass, darkly, of Outlander itself.
It led me to think of this story idea of a mad woman:
“What am I going to do?” sighed Emily. “I am sad. I am tired, I am depressed. I want to run away to the turn of the 20th century to a glamorous and dreadful big city in Europe.”
“Yes! To get lost in romantic ruin, in a world where my dog would not eat salmon cakes and Himalayan cheese daily. After all, at the turn of the 20th century an unmarried woman of thirty, even a marvelously wealthy one, of a dynasty or merchant trader perhaps, would not have to choose the fate of her boredom like I do today!”
